Athens again?

Hello guys, Final trip to Greece here.

In November 2013, the week of my birthday (29th Nov, I’m accepting gifts ), I decided to go spend it in Athens with my new friend Greg from couchsurfing.com, also two of my friends from Nigeria.

I think I got there on the 22nd and left on the 27th. My friend Greg picked me up from the airport, and took me to his aunts empty house with no furniture because I think his dad was at his house, so he brought airbeds. I used Aegean airlines but my bag didn’t come that day, had to go to the airport the next day to get it.

That evening Greg took me to this lovely restaurant in a busy area of Attica (the historical region of Athens), called Chalandri, the restaurant is called Tenekedia. The food there was lovely and the atmosphere just right. We also went to Ster Cinemas Escape, where I watched Thor, after we had some tea with his friend at a cafe in the premises.

At some point I was alone in the apartment (host went to work) and he had left his data/internet stick with me (seeing as the apartment was empty and had no wifi), but I didn’t have the software and couldn’t download it, so I went wondering to find a Vodafone store, and  found one not too far from the apartment, sorted it out, and just generally walked around until Greg and I went to get my friends from the airport, Yay!!

That evening we went to the centre, around the pantheon and the Acropolis, had a lovely dinner and walked around. The closest metro station to them in the centre is Monastiraki, from that station you can walk around the busy streets of the centre, filled with shops, cafe’s, bars, restaurants and street food. It’s really lively and pretty during the day and even prettier at night, especially the well lit Acropolis.

Tip: just in case you’re passing through and need somewhere to lock your bags, they have lockers at the metro station (Monastiraki) or you could ask at a hostel, even if you’re not staying there, there’s also Athens Studios or Athens Lockers click on either link and you’ll see the prices, it’s never usually more than 3euros per day I think.

It was a new and sunny day and Jite and Deyo were with me in a different country, I think this might have been my first experience at a holiday with friends. We didn’t have much time as Jite and Deyo had to get back to their lives, so we decided to do a little exploring, we managed to find our way to the port of Piraeus (basically take a metro to the piraeus station, its on the end of the green line) and took a ferry to Aegina (directions), a small island about 27km from Athens.

We only had about two hours to spend there, so we took some pictures, went on a horse carriage ride around the tiny island and waited for the ferry to get back to Athens.

Sadly my friends were leaving the next day. I was meant to stay until my birthday, but I was moody (because of my birthday), just wasn’t feeling like I had achieved much that year, so I decided to change my flight.

And that my friends is the end of my adventure. Such a gloomy end right? It’s like that sometimes, not every holiday has a happy ending (most do, perspective…). I had a fun time when I could though.

I returned to Serbia and wallowed alone in my room until and after my birthday.

Take Charge,

Sonia.
